Acqua For Life 2012 - Armani perfumes against world thirst

By EDITORIAL STAFF
armani-aqua_784x0.jpg

Giorgio Armani
likes challenges. Even the toughest ones. Like the dream of taking water where there are only deserts and drought.

To quench thirst in Ghana and Bolivia is the Italian Designer’s goal for 2012. A goal that is now a renewed commitment.

In fact, in 2011, thanks to the campaign Acqua For Life, 43 million liters of drinkable water were gathered and donated to 27 thousand people, among which 3500 children.

Breathtaking numbers. But they are nothing when compared to the dreadful truth: everyday 4000 children in the world die due to illnesses related to water, which could have been prevented. And about 900 million people don’t have access to drinkable water. After all, if it’s true that water covers about 75% of the planet’s surface, it’s also true that only 3% of it is freshwater and less than 1% (0.7%) can be accessed to. Thus the deficiency.

Armani bets he can go beyond the record numbers of last year with an awareness campaign to open the entire world’s indifferent eyes to the real problems of our planet Earth, often forgotten in the frenzy of modern life. Like environment and development issues, especially referring to the shortage and safetiness of water.

Acqua for Life 2012 supports the eco-friendly projects of Green Cross International (GCI), the non-governmental organization founded in 1993 by Mikhail Gorbaciov, a charity association that has fought for years to ensure a safe and sustainable future. “I’m always very much aware of the problems related to the environment and especially regarding water, an element that I am quite fond of because it’s regenerative, precious and essential for living,” explains designer Giorgio Armani.

To fulfill his project he has involved his most famous fragrances, inspired precisely by the purity of water. In other words, Acqua di Giò (for him) and Acqua di Gioia (for her), dedicated to Mother Nature, to her energy, generosity, freshness and harmony.

How can you take part in the project? Starting from March 1st to May 31st, by purchasing one of the two perfumes you will donate 100 liters of drinkable water. You can also choose to go to the Facebook page of Acqua For Life and click “Like” to donate 50 liters of drinkable water. On the event’s website, you can have fun creating our own avatar and take part in a virtual “water race” that will take you to Ghana and Bolivia, with a challenge filled with thrills and surprises. And, above all, good feelings.

Argyle Pink Jubilee: Rare pink diamond discovered

By EDITORIAL STAFF
argyle pink jubilee.jpg

Mining giant Rio Tinto has unearthed a “remarkable” 12.76 carat Pink diamond in Australia, the largest of the rare and precious stones ever found in the country.

Named the Argyle Pink Jubilee, the huge rough stone was found at Rio’s pink diamond operations in the Kimberley region of Western Australia and would take 10 days to cut and polish, the miner said.

“This rare diamond is generating incredible excitement,” said Josephine Johnson from Rio’s Argyle Pink Diamonds division.

“A diamond of this calibre is unprecedented — it has taken 26 years of Argyle production to unearth this stone and we may never see one like this again.

Rio said extremely high quality pink diamonds could fetch in excess of US$1 million per carat, meaning it is likely to go for at least $10 million.

Soaring demand for the extremely rare jewel has seen pink diamond prices skyrocket in the past 20 years and they are now among “the most concentrated forms of wealth on earth and well in excess of white diamonds,” Rio said.

The miner describes it as an “elite and discrete” market with buyers including royalty, heads of state, celebrities and “other very wealthy individuals.”

Bugatti to unveil World’s most powerful roadster in Geneva

By EDITORIAL STAFF

vitesse.jpg

The world's automakers continue to provide a glimpse of what to expect at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show in March. The latest teaser comes from Bugatti, which will unveil its Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse, calling it the world's most powerful roadster - time to invest in some super-strength adhesive for that toupee.

The Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse is essentially an open-top version of the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, which currently holds the world speed record for a production car at 268.8 mph (431 km/h).

For the new roadster, Bugatti's engineers have upped the power of the current open-top Grand Sport, which boasts 1,001-horsepower and torque of 1,250 Nm, to 1,200-horsepower and a maximum torque of 1,500 Nm for the Vitesse. The power increase of the vehicle's 16-cylinder engine comes courtesy of four enlarged turbochargers and intercoolers, with the chassis modified to support the power increase.

Bugatti hasn't revealed pricing for the new car, but don't go expecting much change from US$2 million.

Ferrari Hydroplane Heading to RM Auctions in Monaco

By EDITORIAL STAFF
Ferrari-hydroplane-heads-for-RM_s-Monaco-auction-.jpg

Almost sixty years ago, wealthy boat-racing privateer Achille Castoldi created the Arno XI hydroplane racing boat powered by a Ferrari engine.

The engine is a 4.5 liter 12-cylinder Ferrari engine similar to that found in the Type 375 grand prix car that was driven to victory by Jose Froilan Gonzalez at the 1951 Silverstone GP. Modified for record breaking marine duty, the engine ran on methanol to allow higher compression ratios for the additional twin-superchargers to deliver more than 500-hp.

In 1953, the Arno XI piloted by Castoldi averaged speeds exceeding 150 mph. Castoldi followed up to break the “24 nautical miles” record in the 800 kg category when the ARNO XI averaged 102.13 mph. As the Italian Powerboat Federation later changed speedboating categories, this record remains unbroken. Apparently, Ferrari is familiar with winning on land and at sea.

Now this beautiful and historic hydroplane can be yours. The RM Auction will put the Arno XI on the block during RM’s Monaco sale on May 11th and 12th. According to RM, the Arno XI is complete with “an extensive history file” that contains period photos, as well as hand written notes from Ferrari engineer Gioacchino Colombo. According to experts, the boat is expected to be valued between $1.3 million to $1.9 million.
