The Fashion Statement: Italians Do It Better?
By EDITORIAL STAFF
Milan is delivering the most exciting fashion weeks in years. Fashion critics have been giving rave reviews to Italian designers saying that, for the most part, the collections have been inspired.
One of the more subdued shows of the week, Giorgio Armani (pictured above), presented a spring/summer 2011 collection of entirely navy blue and black--not exactly the most spring/summery of colors. No matter, the fitted double breasted blazers, one-shouldered gowns and skirts over sheer leggings were stunning. Even more interesting: His models were turned out in turbans and veils.
As for the rest of them, Milanese designers went mad for neon, prints and all-around visual mayhem. Prada (pictured below), sent out a parade of eye-blinding combinations, showing a green-and-black horizontally striped skirt with a black-and-white striped handbag and red-yellow-and-black checkered Mary Janes. It works.
Colors and prints are where labels Missoni, Versus and Etro excel, so the expectation was great. They did not disappoint. True to heritage, Missoni sent out apron dresses and tribal looking patchworks of knits in multi-colored yarn while Versus and Etro combined bold florals with geometric prints.
There was also hope for Pucci, another house known for print and color, but by and large fashion critics were disappointed. The line's subtle batik prints and neutral-colored day dresses paled in comparison to other house's acid hues.
I have always wondered when the '70s obsession with prairie dresses and fussy floral prints would rear its head again. Aquilano.Rimondi answered my question--now. The designer showed floor-grazing versions along with horizontal-striped yellow, red and black skirts paired with floral shirts on black backgrounds. Sounds questionable, I know, but it was gorgeous.
Lest you think harem pants are a thing of the past, think again. Gucci presented high-waisted versions with a crotch that dropped halfway down the thigh for day, and below the knee for night.
Dolce & Gabbana, once again, payed tribute to Sicily. This time, and perhaps on the same monochrome tip as Armani, the designers reinterpreted your Italian grandmother's lace table cloths in a collection of virginal whites.
Finally, a note about hair. What did many Italian designers choose? The slicked back chignon. According to a piece in the New York Times this morning, one editor found the look severe and aggressive, while another said it was the only round element in collections filled with angles and lines.

New Pagani Huayra. See the Video
By EDITORIAL STAFF
After taking a look at our high-res image gallery below, we were tempted to say the Pagani Huayra made its o-fish-ial web debut... but we won't. Oh, wait.
In any case, Pagani's newest supercar can now be seen in all its glory, and we generally approve of the overall styling, despite the fact it's got something of a bottom-feeder fascia up front. Moving past that, we see a pretty serious set of gullwing doors and enough slats, flares and strakes to fill the sketchbook of a Boeing designer.
All those aero aids will surely come in handy when all the fury of the Mercedes-Benz AMG-built 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 engine is unleashed on the hapless pair of rear tires – the Huayra is said to be capable of speeds up near 230 miles per hour.
Over 700 horsepower and about 740 pound-feet of torque will be sent to the ground through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Couple that with a weight of just under 3,000 pounds – aided by copious amounts of carbon fiber – and you have the makings of a 21st century rear-wheel drive rocket ship.
Inside you'll find all the luxury touches you'd expect, including a cockpit slathered in beautiful hides and exposed aluminum and carbon fiber. You'll also bask in the glowing blue gauges and multi-function display that controls audio, navigation and communications gadgetry.
Even if we're just a tad stuck on that front fascia, there's simply no arguing with this level of performance. Have a close look at the Huayra below, then check out the (translated) press release after break.

Jet Piaggio P180 Exhibited As Art In the Gallery Vittorio Emanuele II° Milan
By EDITORIAL STAFF

Renowned Italian sculptor, painter and printmaker Mimmo Paladino has become perhaps the
first to turn a private jet into a work of art with the
installation of a painted
Piaggio P.180 Avanti II aircraft at the
Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan. Dubbed the “Cacciatore di
Stelle” (Star Hunter), Paladino’s plane will be on display in the
famed centre through April 28. Paladino decorated the turboprop
with ancestral symbols, constellations and geometrical designs in
homage to the skies in which it travels.
The “Cacciatore di Stelle” is part of the “anthological and
personal” exhibition of Paladino’s work hosted by the Palazzo
Reale, the seat of government of the Italian city of Milan for
many centuries and today is an important cultural centre,
including more than 50 of his artworks from the ‘70s to the
present day. “The P.180 Avanti has been chosen because it can be
considered a work of art itself,” notes Alberto Galassi, CEO of
Piaggio Aero Industries, “an expression of Italian genius in
design and engineering.”
