By EDITORIAL STAFF
urlo-munch-sothebys.jpeg

Edvard Munch's 1895 expressionist work "The Scream" sold for a record-setting $119,922,500 at a Sotheby's auction Wednesday night. Bidding for the Norwegian artist's depiction of anxiety started at $40 million and after more than twelve minutes of one-upping, the gavel banged for a phone bidder. The pastel-on-board rendering of the recognizable work is one of four versions of the painting and the only one in private hands. According to the Associated Press, Sotheby's said that it's "the most colorful and vibrant of the four and the only version whose frame was hand-painted by the artist to include his poem, detailing the work's inspiration." The previous record price for artwork put up at an auction was $106.5 million for Picasso's "Nude, Green Leaves, and Bust," sold by Christie's in 2010. The buyer's name has not been disclosed but the individual is believed to be someone with a ton of money.

Here’s Kate Moss’ 32nd British Vogue Cover

By EDITORIAL STAFF

Kate-Moss-Vogue-UK-June-2012-01.jpg

Insanely prolific Vogue cover girl Kate Moss has nabbed her first Vogue UK cover of 2012. And based on her track record, there’s a pretty decent chance it won’t be her last. She’s now been on 32 (!?!) covers of the magazine’s British edition alone since her first in March 1993.

For the June cover–shot by Mert and Marcus–Moss is giving us old Hollywood vibes in Versace. The rope she’s grasping must have something to do with “sport” theme of the issue. Let’s hope she’s doing some Olympics-esque acrobatics inside.

What do you think of the cover? Do you think her Vogue UK Cover tally will soon catch up to her age?

Chopard Imperiale Tourbillon Full Set

By EDITORIAL STAFF
chopard-imperiale-tourbillon-full-set-1.jpg

It helps to have a sibling who cares enough to share. In the case of Chopard, its magnanimous kin comes in the form of Chopard L.U.C., the company’s younger division that prides itself on creating timepieces with technical prowess.

Pair the artisanal gem-setting of the former with the mechanical finesse of the latter, and one gets a watch that dazzles on both aesthetic and technical fronts, as exemplified by the Imperial Tourbillon Full Set.

At first glance, what astounds is the utter lavishness of the watch, which features a white gold case thoroughly blanketed by brilliant- and baguette-cut diamonds. The effect is heightened by the House’s exquisite snow-setting technique, which leaves no visible traces of metal between the stones.

Get past the glitter, however, and one finds that the watch has plenty more to offer. The timepiece’s superbly poised tourbillon complication at 6 o’clock, held in place by a decidedly exotic and Arabesque bridge, is powered by the highly technical, hand-wound L.U.C movement.

Besides driving the tourbillon mechanism, which corrects gravitational errors for better timing regulation, the movement features top-notch technical attributes such as COSC certification that guarantees top-rate chronometric precision, and the proprietary four-barrel Quattro technology for nine-day power reserve.

Admittedly, it is the blizzard of diamonds on the Imperial Tourbillon Full Set that Chopard fans will first find irresistible. But for those who know better, it is the watch’s mechanical might that makes it a true keepsake.

Motor-yacht-LA-PELLEGRINA-launched-–-the-1st-5000-FLY-COUACH-superyacht-665x443.jpg

The historical French Shipyard Chantier Naval Couach has just announced the launch of its latest and largest yacht ever built - “La Pellegrina”.

The new Couach 5000 Fly superyacht has become a highly anticipated launch from the shipyard. Now, featuring bold lines true to the shipyard's military origins, the wait is over.

La Pellegrina hit the water in the bay of Arcachon this week as 3,000 people who came especially to witness this great event looked on in awe. Entirely built in Glass Kevlar with Carbon reinforcement by infusion process, this 495GT vessel only weighs 290T and is able to cruise in amazing comfort at 28kts in heavy sea conditions.

The exterior lines are designed by Couach and the interior is signed by the talented Designer Jean Pierre Fantini.

Final delivery to her owner is scheduled for the last week of May in the port of St Tropez, during which the Shipyard will organize a three day private preview for both clients and brokers.

The yacht will start its Charter season in July 2012 and will then be showcased during the Monaco Yacht Show in September 2012. Hulls no 2 and 3 are already in production for delivery in 2013 and 2014.

Australian Billionaire Clive Palmer to build Titanic II

By EDITORIAL STAFF

416_cp24_clive_palmer_120430.jpg

The mining billionaire told Australian media that construction would start at the end of next year.

It would be ready to set sail in 2016.

The plan, he added, was for the vessel to be as similar as possible to the original Titanic in design and specifications, but with modern technology.

Mr Palmer told Australian media that he had signed a memorandum of understanding with CSC Jinling Shipyard to construct the ship.

"It will be every bit as luxurious as the original Titanic but of course it will have state-of-the-art 21st Century technology and the latest navigation and safety systems," he said in a statement.

The announcement comes just weeks after the centenary of the sinking of the ill-fated Titanic.

The vessel, the largest luxury ship in its time, struck an iceberg on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York. It went down on 15 April 1912, leaving more than 1,500 people dead.

"Of course it will sink if you put a hole in it,'' Mr Palmer said in response to questions from reporters on whether the Titanic replica would sink.

The new vessel is scheduled to sail from London to New York in late 2016, if all goes as planned.

"It is going to be designed so it won't sink,'' he added. ''But, of course, if you are superstitious like you are, you never know what could happen.''

The cost of the construction is not known, a spokesman for Mr Palmer told Australian media.

The mining magnate from Queensland, who has strong business relations with China, has expanded into tourism. He owns a luxury resort on the Sunshine Coast and has plans to build a fleet of luxury liners.

His plan to build the Titanic replica was announced on the same day that he revealed plans, in a separate news conference, to contest the next federal election in Queensland.

He told reporters that he has expressed interest in standing for Queensland's Liberal National Party (LNP), part of the conservative opposition at federal level, in the Brisbane seat of Lilley - currently held by Deputy Prime Minister and Treasurer Wayne Swan.
